My World on the USS Trippe FF1075 From Charleston Around the World
This is a reference and pictoral documentation of the exploits and adventures I experienced, along with my shipmates, during my assignment with the USS Trippe, from 1976 to 1980, at sea, at port, and ashore.
The additional sites and pictorals are courtesy of the United States Navy, fellow seamen, and the Greek Navy, which extend from the 1812 Sloop to 1911 DD33, 1939 as DD 403 to 1972, DE1075, to the decommissioning of FF1075, in 1992, then reassigned to Greece as the Thraki F457.
Recommissioned in Greek Navy service as HS Thraki (F457), she took her new name from the Greek region of Thrace. (from the Hellenic Navy's website) From "Johnny" dated 2004,,,, "The Greek vessel Thrace ( Thraki ) was sitting in Souda Bay, Crete awaiting to be salvaged as scrap during the summer of 2003. There was apparently a major lube oil fire and the interior was destroyed. " As may be seen above, the last picture, and through pictorals in the LINKS below, she was towed out to sea, used as target practice, and sunk.
Dedicated to those whom, without their presence and their spirit, the life aboard and asea, would have been unbearable, a curt list: Bill Reese, Doug Handwork, George Sherwin, Noche ( Hey Pangit!! ), Renwick (Hey DEER!! ), Chief Murao, LT. wazisname, and yeah, you too David.....

Remember "Crumby Departing" ???? Then him throwing his seabag over the side?
How about the idiot on drugs climbing aloft into the radar, and I had to shut it down, so he didnt fry???
The wreck with the Helo detachment, as the LAMPS flipped, in Rosy Roads???
Ohhh, lets not forget "General Quarters" in Africa, when they dropped the nuclear missile on deck!!!
((Of course we can neither confirm nor deny the presence of a mushroom cloud thereafter!!! ))
The typhoon in the Persian Gulf ripping open the sonar dome???
How about our Commander sleeping with a gun under his pillow, or was it all three Captains???
(( Again we can neither confirm nor deny the presence of loaded weaponry ))

A Bird's Eye View of ALL the USS Trippes' From A Sloop ( representative of 1812 ) : 1912 & 1939 DD's, 1972 DE ~ 1975 FF , to 1992 HS
Lieutenant John Trippe, U.S.Navy in whose honour the U.S.S. TRIPPE, is named
He entered the U.S. Navy as a midshipman in 1799. At that time the Barbary pirates were a real danger to merchant ships, not only on the Mediterranean, but on the Atlantic Ocean as well. Of John Trippe's part in the Battle of Tripoli, paraphrased, from the history of our Navy by John R. Spears. Of equal bravery were the men on the third American Gunboat. She was commanded by Sailing Master John Trippe and Midshipman John D. Henley. Hanging up beside the enemy, those two officers and nine men got on board , and then the two boats separated, leaving the eleven men to face the whole barbarian crew, with no chance of retreat and little hope of timely assistance. Pikes and swords in hand, the eleven charged the enemy, Trippe and Henley singling out the Tripoliton Captain, knowing that victory was assured if they could cut him down. Fighting with the energy born of fanaticism, he wounded Trippe no less than eleven times, and at last Trippe went down with one knee on the deck, but while in this position he caught the Tripolitan with breast unguarded and thrust him through with a pike. Thus ending one of the most remarkable fights recorded in the annals of our Navy. For Trippe and crew killed fourteen of the Tripolitans taking twenty-two prisoners. Besides Trippe, a boatswain's mate and two marines were wounded, but none was killed among the Americans. For John Trippe's distinguished service at Tripoli he received the Official thanks of Congress and was awarded the Congressional Medal as well as a sword. He died of yellow fever while on duty in Cuba in 1810. Since those days the name of Trippe has been closely associated with the Navy. He was born in Dorchester County in 1785 was the son of Capt. William Trippe and wife Mary Noel. As related by Mrs. J. T. Trippe, mother of Miss Betty Trippe, sponsor for this ship.
